How to Clay Bar a Car Step by Step
April 7, 2026 - 8 min read
Run your hand across your paint after washing. Feel those rough bumps? That is contamination embedded in your clear coat. A clay bar removes it.
What You Need
- Clay bar or clay mitt
- Clay lubricant or quick detailer spray
- Microfiber towels
- A freshly washed car
Step by Step
Step 1: Wash your car thoroughly first.
Step 2: Spray clay lubricant on a small 2x2 foot section.
Step 3: Glide the clay bar across the surface with light pressure. Back and forth, not circles.
Step 4: Wipe the area with a clean microfiber towel.
Step 5: Repeat on every panel.
Clay Bar vs Clay Mitt
Clay mitts are faster and easier. Traditional clay bars give slightly better results on heavily contaminated paint but are slower. For most people, a clay mitt is the better choice.
How Often?
Two to four times per year for daily drivers. Once or twice for garage-kept cars.
